If you’re thinking about picking up an Oculus Quest 2 for Christmas or still trying to decide if it’s worth an upgrade from the Quest 1, Oculus is trying to nudge you to pull out that credit card. Starting today, new Quest 2 purchases will qualify for a free copy of the critically acclaimed PC VR RPG Asgard’s Wrath. You’ll need a PC powerful enough to run VR and the proper cable (or Virtual Desktop), but if you do, you’re in for a treat.

This is an excellent “gift” for new purchasers but the timing of this deal has frustrated some early adopters. While it is a common business practice to offer free stuff to entice new customers, coming only six weeks after the Quest 2 launch was destined to draw the ire of the loyal fans who purchased on day one.

A better example of this promotion happened only months ago with the original Quest, where six months after launch, they offered the Vader Immortal series free to new Quest purchasers. Most early adopters were fine with that because they would not have wanted to wait six months to save $30, but I suspect that plenty would have waited six weeks for an epic RPG like Asgard’s Wrath.

Of course, plenty of people complained about the Vader Immortal promotion at the time, because it’s the internet, and those complainers were met with the proper eye rolls from us more reasonable shoppers. However, this one is harder to justify.

I get it, we’re early adopters, we don’t need gifts to pull the trigger and give you our lunch money. You already have us in the bag, and I’m at peace with that.  But maybe next time wait a little bit longer than just out of the one-month return policy to roll out the first big promotion.
