Today marks the release of the latest Star Wars adventure from Lucasfilm effects studio ILMxLAB, the makers of Vader Immortal. Jump into the shoes of a droid mechanic who has managed to piss off the dreaded Guavian Death Gang on the planet of Batuu. The wilds of Batuu, of course, is the setting of Lucasfilm’s Galaxy Edge attraction at Disney World and Disney Land. So this offers a way to experience the Star Wars universe without the threat of contacting a flaming case of Covid.
In a bit of a reversal from the Vader Immortal series, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is an action game light on story but heavy on action. The bulk of that action is blasting away at the Guavian Death Gang with blasters that you can find in weapon crates or scavenge off of dead bad guys. You will get a chance to test the lightsaber skills that you amassed in Vader Immortal, but that section is painfully short.
Unfortunately, painfully short may be a good way to describe the whole game. You can see all of what Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge has to offer in under four hours, but ILMxLAB has announced story DLC coming next year so there is more to look forward to.
Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is available now for $24.99, exclusively for the Oculus Quest. The Vader Immortal series was exclusive with Oculus for a year, but it eventually released on the PSVR so there is precedent. Hopefully, Star Wars fans with other headsets can enjoy this one eventually.
