Another announcement out of Facebook Connect (formerly Oculus Connect) came in the form of a bullet to the nutsack: Sniper Elite VR.
The game had previously been announced for PCVR and PSVR, but the Rebellion/Just Add Water-developed VR shooter will also be releasing on the Quest headsets – both of them. And, once again, our intelligence is being insulted with another unrealistic trailer, though to be fair, the trailer does note that it’s not indicative of the final game. But c’mon, look at the bloody trailer – it won’t look anything like that on the Quest, or even the Quest 2. Surely we can get some realistic trailers that represent the final product though, right?
Still, the excitement is real. It’s always great to see the Quest get big-name games, and it’s sure to be another great get for the platform.
It’s going to be a little different to previous Sniper Elite games, mind you, as it’ll now be entirely first-person – a natural move for the game’s shift to VR. And, to further remove Sniper Elite VR from its origins, the game will feature a standalone story with 18 replayable missions. Some things will remain intact, like the authentic WW2 weapons and the ball-crunching X-ray kill-cams. That should be appetising in VR…
Sniper Elite VR’s release date hasn’t been confirmed for any platform just yet, but according to earlier announcements, the game is set to release before the end of 2020. Whether that means all platforms will release this side of Christmas or not isn’t known. It could be that the PCVR and PSVR version release first, with the Oculus Quest versions releasing later, a little like The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners.
