The humble PlayStation VR may not be on the bleeding edge when it comes to its VR capabilities, but it’s still a great entry point for anyone wanting to dip their nose into virtual reality gaming. If you’ve not yet picked up a headset, Sony’s promise of “big offers” for the headset around Black Friday and Christmas may tip you on-course.
Speaking with Gameindustry.biz, Sony CEO Jim Ryan states that “the company remains committed to the category, with big offers planned around Black Friday and Christmas,” though it would be unwise to expect any big PSVR announcements. Still, the promise of some strong promotional activity around the big holiday season is an indicator that Sony remains committed to the platform and wants as many players in the eco-system as possible.
The next big, first-party game due for the PSVR is Marvel’s Iron Man, due in February 19th, 2020. Aside from that, there’s nothing else publically known about Sony’s first-party VR plans. There’s word that Sony Japan is already working on a PSVR game for the PS5, but Sony hasn’t announced anything.
I think it’s safe to assume that we won’t see any more first-party PSVR releases after Iron Man VR, as Sony will no doubt be pushing against the release of PlayStation 5 next winter and possible a PSVR 2 headset soon after.
